Helping Families With QDROs in Washington State
Many people agree that money can’t buy happiness. However, people generally understand that money is necessary for acquiring essential goods and services, such as food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and education. That is why the law recognizes the importance of domestic support orders in divorce cases, such as child support and spousal support. Without such orders, separated or divorcing spouses and parents would have to endure significant financial hardships.
Federal law recognizes the importance of state court domestic relations orders. As a result, former spouses and minor children of separated parents can access someone’s retirement or pension benefits if a court deems it necessary to satisfy a person’s legal obligations under state domestic relations laws.
At Pacific Cascade Legal, our attorneys have years of valuable experience regarding financial issues in various family law cases —including the division of community assets and domestic support obligations, like child support and alimony. Our legal team is here to preserve you and your family’s best interests when it comes to legal and financial matters arising from family law and divorce cases.

What Is a QDRO?
A qualified domestic relations order (QDRO) is a state court order regarding the division of property upon divorce, child support, and alimony. Ordinarily, qualified retirement plans, pensions, and other financial savings vehicles that provide people with certain tax benefits are protected from certain creditors. One of the ways a creditor can access such accounts is through certain state court domestic relations orders regarding the division of marital property, as well as obligations to pay child and spousal support.
A QDRO in Washington State allows persons and entities who are entrusted with managing retirement and pension plans to allocate a portion of the plan’s benefits to someone under the order’s terms. Access to financial accounts using a QDRO gives former spouses and minor children a source of domestic support after divorces and separations.
A QDRO are essential for accessing funds from the following sources:
- Public pension plans
- Private pension programs
- 401(k) plans
- Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) with rollover features
